The Pros and Cons of Social Media Part II

About a week ago, a Facebook Live video came through my feed, it was of a young broken woman who had made some bad choices in her life and life and people had not been kind to her.  In her brokenness, she was at a place of desperation and despair and people who feed off of that kind of hopelessness made choices to mistreat, kick, abuse this damaged young woman even more, they took advantage of what appeared to be a soul that had given up and they didn't care.

Well, this young women was at such a low point in her life's journey that she went live on Facebook and told her story of brokenness (heart, energy, spirit, and soul), so much so that it was her intentions to end her life with people watching.  To watch her crying, sad, depressed, and feeling unloved all people could feel for her was brokenhearted that someone felt so unloved, unvalued, and did not understand or see her purpose in this life.

As she loaded her gun and gazed from the camera telling her story, she would have moments where you could visibly see her simply zone out into space and as I watched the video, I wondered to myself, how someone could give anyone that kind of POWER over their life, their belief about themselves, and whether or not they deserved and had the right to live.  People were left emotionally drained and concerned about what happened to her as she loaded a gun as the video ended.

Then something phenomenal happened, social media showed the God-driven, the Higher Power, a spiritual awakening and more importantly in this context a spiritual and emotional movement of HUMANITY.  Here is where social media made me so happy, people were so moved and invested in the right for this human being they did not know but wanted her to know that she was loved and her life mattered, and there was an outpouring of love, encouragement, value, and support that swept across everyone who saw the video and felt the empathetic vibrations of the despair she was feeling.

HUMANITY won that day and it won with the help of social media and after I cried for her, my heart smiled because it was in that moment that even though I see the state of the world and the anger and hateful nature of people, I see the good in so many too.

Her name is Johannah Martin and she is a survivor of her circumstances, some self-inflicted and some perpetrated by the wickedness of others, but she is surviving and social media helped her learn she is much more than what she taught herself to be.
